  • I asked her if she was joking. Her frown told me she wasn’t. “Every last penny, gone,” she said.. “And that’s not the worst of it,” she continued, leaning across the table intently.

“Not the wors — what the hell, June?” My voice squeaked in a furious whisper. “How can you lose two million dollars in one week and say that’s not the worst of it?”

“I signed us up for another job,” she said flatly.
I scoffed, pulling my hand away and slinging my purse over my shoulder. “No, you signed yourself up for another job. This is me, bouncing away from your lunatic ass.”

“Sit the fuck down,” she said.

I raised my eyebrows and stood right the fuck up.

    “I found Johnny.”

    I sat the fuck down.

“Talk,” I said, not dropping my purse strap from my shoulder.

“Your brother went to Romania to study the local fauna, which you and I both know is red tape bullshit. He went there to study werewolves.”

I sighed and shook my head. “June, that’s nonsense and you know it. It doesn’t matter what his travel journal said, he was obviously on some kind of drug.”

She laid a hand over mine. “I thought it was nonsense. Lord knows I tried to convince myself that surely he’d have told me, his wife. But the truth is that he didn’t. He never told either of us. And who could blame him? I know I wouldn’t have believed him.”

I closed my eyes, “June, you’re grasping at straws. He disappeared two years ago. We’re thieves, not biological researchers. We hit his employers, got the money, and we got the files. There was nothing in there at all. And now you’ve wasted all of it, and I won’t let you drag me down with you.”

June banged her fist down on the table. “God damnit, listen to me. You remember the code name in the file, right? Lupo? I retraced Johnny’s itinerary and I found a guide in Romania that goes by the name Lupo and I am not even going to pretend it was cheap getting that information. The Roma people are secretive and with good reason. They’ve been persecuted their whole lives. They said if we do this one job for them, they’ll take us to Johnny.”

I opened my eyes and met June’s earnest blue gaze. “He didn’t find the werewolves. The werewolves found him.”
